As many of you know, Larry Butts has stepped down as Chairman of ShenLUG and has turned over the reins to Alvin Smith. Sanford Aubin has written a fitting tribute to Larry in a letter simply titled:
Thank You Larry
On September 16th, I joined this mailing list. I live in Delaplane, Fauquier County, and deleted my last on-line Win partition in 1998. I've been going it alone ever since, cuts and bruises and banged up knees and cusses and moans and frustration and sometimes I just give up, dammit! What I did not do was realize that a local community of like-minded strugglers might exist. I did not take the initiative to find out, to be a focal point, to create a forum. You initiated, Larry. You started this ShenLUG with the few you found around you. You grew the community. Even though I haven't participated, I recognize the value of your efforts, the list, the efforts to coordinate, the being responsible. We've watched your painful struggle as you found yourself moving inevitably towards an unwelcome decision -- to let go, turn it over. Thank you, Larry, for trying so hard, both for yourself and for the rest of us. Therefore, unless and until something similar and in a fancier form should appear, I dare to speak on behalf of the members of ShenLUG and the rest of us who have struggled to move forward the principle of free and open communication based on free and open software, and designate this email as:
